요약(Summary)

Have you ever heard of the ‘Department of Science Studies at Jeonbuk National University?’ If you are not a science studies major, even the term “science studies” is probably unfamiliar to you. In the six years between my undergraduate studies in 2018 and my graduate studies, the most common question I received from people was, “What does the Department of Science Studies teach?” The more I explained about ‘Department of Science Studies,’ the more I had to laugh off the reactions of people around me, such as “Science is just science, then what is science studies?” There was a time when I was confused about how to define ‘science studies’ and how to conduct research. Therefore, in this article, I explain why I was attracted to science studies and what I would like to do with science studies through the analogy of research and cooking. In conclusion, I hope this article can serve as a useful reference for undergraduate students who are confused about the identity of science studies as well as graduate students who are struggling with research to find their way in science studies.

‘전북대학교 과학학과’에 대해 들어본 적이 있는가? 아마도 과학학 전공자가 아닌 독자라면 ‘과학학’이라는 용어조차 생소하게 느껴질 것이다. 2018년 과학학과 학부 입학 후 대학원생이 되기까지 6년간 사람들에게 가장 많이 받은 질문은 “과학학과가 무엇을 배우는 학과인가?”였다. ‘과학학과’에 대한 부연 설명을 하면 할수록 “과학이면 과학이지, 과학학은 또 뭐람?”과 같은 주변 사람들의 반응을 대수롭지 않게 웃어넘기는 일은 일상이 되었다. 사람들의 이러한 반응과 함께 나도 ‘과학학’을 어떻게 정의할 것이며, 또 연구는 어떻게 해야 할지에 대해 혼란을 겪은 시기가 있었다. 따라서 이 글에서는 내가 과학학에 매력을 느낀 이유와 연구와 요리의 비유를 통해 과학학으로 만들고 싶은 요리를 보여주고자 한다. 결론적으로 이 글을 통해 과학학의 정체성에 혼란을 느끼는 학부생뿐만 아니라 연구를 어려워하는 대학원생이 과학학에서 자신의 길을 찾는 데 유익한 참조가 되기를 기대한다.
