Characteristics of the academic field and education objectives
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication serves as the central hub of the culture and video sector among Jeonbuk National University's three major specialization strategies. In collaboration with the Video Industry Support Center, it is implementing development plans that include participating in the development of traditional culture, revitalizing field practice, developing cultural video education programs, establishing a cultural video development system, and fostering professionals.
The department aims to cultivate researchers with the qualities of the subject through the exploration of communication phenomena, professional journalists required by the media of future society, and experts in media and related fields.
In particular, it has set a goal of training professionals well-versed in both theory and practice who can adapt to the multi-media society and rapidly changing media environment triggered by the transition to the 21st-century information society.
Curriculum Organization and Characteristics
To foster professionals in journalism and broadcasting, our department has organized its curriculum to efficiently link core major courses (required), theoretical major courses (elective), and practical major courses (elective), enabling students to progress step-by-step from the basics to practical training.
he undergraduate program of the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting at our university teaches both academic theory and the practical skills required of a professional. As of 2006, core major courses include History of Korean Journalism, Popular Culture, Media Industry, Mass Communication Research Methodology II, and Communication Theory. Furthermore, various theories derived from these core courses have been incorporated into the theoretical major courses to enhance connectivity with the core curriculum. By
placing various practical courses upon this theoretical foundation, we have efficiently structured the curriculum to allow students to progress from core theories to derived theories, and finally to practical applications of those theories. Through advanced practical courses, we are dedicated to cultivating talent well-versed in both theory and practice.
