The Institute for Local Government Studies was established in 1991 with the purpose of contributing to the sound development of local governments, and to this end, it conducts research and data collection related to local governments.

The institute is composed of four divisions, including the Research Division, Survey Division, Public Relations Division, and Education Division, and it publishes research journals by holding public lectures, seminars, and workshops on local politics and administration.
