The Institute for Public Conflict and Regional Innovation was established in 2021 with the objectives of building and revitalizing research capabilities in the field of public conflict, fostering conflict-related professionals, and securing a leading academic hub. In 2022, it established partnerships with leading domestic conflict organizations, such as the Korea Social Conflict Resolution Center and the Lake Sihwa Sustainable Partnership. In December 2022, the Institute was selected as the first "Conflict Management Research Institution Designated by the Office for Government Policy Coordination" outside the capital region. It strives to strengthen the capabilities of public officials and civil servants by co-hosting academic conferences with organizations such as the Korean Association of Policy Studies, the Korean Association for Local Government Administration, the Korean Association of Conflict Studies, and the Korean Association for Regional Development, as well as by producing and providing educational programs on topics such as audit administration and conflict management. The Institute houses the Consensus Formation Research Lab, the Conflict Diagnosis and Impact Analysis Research Lab, the Conflict Management Education Research Lab, the Public Conflict Database Research Lab, and the Regional Coexistence Innovation Research Lab, and performs the following duties.
- Consensus Formation Lab: Various research on academic approaches to participatory decision-making based on deliberative democracy, practical institutional design for public deliberation, etc.
- Conflict Diagnosis and Impact Analysis Laboratory: Various research activities that diagnose public conflict phenomena by issue and analyze the extent of their impact on society.
- Conflict Management Education Research Lab: Research and projects that develop, operate, and implement educational programs to establish internal and external conflict management systems and train conflict management experts, including central and local governments, public institutions, and private organizations.
- Public Conflict Case DB Lab: Deepening the methodology for systematic public conflict database construction and conducting practical database construction work.
- Regional Coexistence Innovation Lab: Research on processes, relationship building, institutionalization, and policies that generate innovation through trust building and capacity building among local residents and stakeholders.
