The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies at Jeonbuk National University (hereinafter referred to as "Jeonbuk Institute") was established in December 2018 and is a highly rare research institution, being the third university research institute in Korea to include "Southeast Asia" in its name. The year following its establishment, it secured funding from the National Research Foundation of Korea’s Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Program and conducted research on labor and health and welfare in Southeast Asia for six years. In 2025, it won the same program again and is currently conducting a six-year project titled "Critical Regional Studies on Development Models in Southeast Asia in Transition."
Beyond conducting regional studies on Southeast Asia, Jeonbuk Institute is implementing innovative practices to foster the next generation of scholars by operating educational programs such as the Jeonbuk National University East Asia and Multicultural Convergence Interdisciplinary Major and Southeast Asian Language Camps. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to enhancing citizens' understanding of Southeast Asia through the hosting of regional information sessions, the publication of issue papers and policy reports, and monographs.
