JEONBUK NATIONAL UNIVERSITY
Introduction of Department
The Department of General Social Education at Jeonbuk National University originated in 1977 with the establishment of the Department of Geography Education, which was expanded in 1984 into the Department of Social Education (with majors in Geography Education, General Social Education, and History Education).
In 1998, the Department of Social Education was reorganized into the Faculty of Social Education, and the Department (major) of General Social Education became part of the faculty. Since 2009, when the Geography Education major was separated into the Department of Geography Education, only General Social Education and History Education remained within the Faculty of Social Education. In 2011, with the reorganization from a faculty system to a departmental system, General Social Education became an independent department.
In 2025, in order to broaden the recruitment unit, the department was reorganized into the Faculty of Social Studies Education together with the Departments of History Education, Geography Education, and Ethics Education, and General Social Education once again became a major within the faculty.
What do we learn in our department?
The purpose of the Department of General Social Education is to train competent teachers in charge of secondary social studies and general social education. General society is a subject that allows middle and high school students to systematically understand and explore social science necessary to foster democratic and global citizenship and lead social life, and to improve rational decision-making ability to identify and solve social problems from an integrated perspective. Therefore, the Department of Social Education intends to educate prospective teachers who can develop themselves and develop these qualities in order to train teachers who can be in charge of such education at school sites.
The academic fields of the general social education department consist of a total of five areas: economics, sociology, political science, law, and general social textbook education. Usually, when you are a freshman, you will complete basic education, teaching, and some major courses. As the school year goes up, students learn from five different fields of study, and gradually deepen their academic breadth and depth to complete the curriculum.
In addition, students who choose to study more deeply in their major or double major will be able to obtain two secondary school level 2 certificates by choosing multiple majors (major) that suit their aptitude or aptitude in other fields.(Multiple majors in other departments within the College of Education are available)
Moreover, This department will conduct regular academic exploration once a year to explore cultural assets and historical places that were learned only in books or classrooms, thereby completing the qualifications of secondary school social studies and teachers.
By learning such diverse areas, students who have completed general social education and curriculum will not only be able to study extensively, but also be able to take advantage of various exams such as teacher certification examination.
