Introduction to the Department of Speech-Language Therapy
This is a general graduate program offered by the College of Medicine. Despite recent advances in medicine, the number of people with congenital and moderate speech impairments is increasing. However, limitations in treating speech disorders through clinical treatment alone have been discovered. Therefore, starting in the 1990s, members of the Voice Laboratory, an interdisciplinary research center for professors in experimental phonetics, speech medicine, and speech engineering, recognized the need for speech-language therapy. The need to train speech-language pathologists suitable for hospital systems emerged as an urgent task, leading to the establishment of the Department.
To ensure that students acquire comprehensive speech-language therapy skills, the Department of Speech-Language Therapy requires mandatory clinical observation and practical training in speech-language therapy laboratories and diagnostic radiology departments, including the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, and Orofacial Surgery. During vacation periods, students also participate in field training at prestigious universities abroad or domestic speech-language therapy institutions.

Feature and Benefits
As the name "Speech-Language Therapy" suggests, the department has established itself as Korea's only medical model focused on clinical practice and speech science. Students rotate between five speech-language therapy rooms at the university hospital and the speech-language therapy departments at affiliated hospitals. Through clinically-focused lectures and hands-on training, they acquire extensive speech-language therapy skills. Furthermore, each treatment room is equipped with cutting-edge voice analysis and diagnostic equipment to scientifically analyze the assessment and treatment of speech disorders, then quantify the effectiveness of speech-language therapy for patients. This system fosters the development of trustworthy, information-based speech-language pathologists.
Career path after graduation
You will work as a therapist at a speech therapy institution to treat congenital and moderate speech disorders.
