Introduction
The Department of Upper Gastroenterology performs over 300 gastric cancer surgeries annually, including over 100 cases of gastric submucosal tumor surgery. It also provides surgical treatments for gastric, duodenal, and small bowel diseases, including gastric and duodenal ulcers. Furthermore, it performs effective bariatric surgery for patients with severe obesity and diabetes.
Laparoscopic surgery is now being used for most conditions, including early-stage gastric cancer. Recently, the Department successfully performed laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a highly complex bariatric surgery, for the first time in the Honam region, achieving excellent results.
The Department of Lower Gastroenterology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal and rectal cancers, which are on the rise due to the influence of Westernized diets. Beyond traditional treatments, the Department actively performs anal-sparing and laparoscopic colectomy to maximize colonic function and minimize patient trauma. In addition to cancer treatment, we are also showing active results in the treatment of benign diseases. Equipped with various examination devices including the latest 3D anal ultrasound, we are able to accurately diagnose benign anal diseases such as hemorrhoids, perianal abscesses, fistulas, anal fissures, and rectal prolapse, resulting in excellent surgical results. In addition, we are in charge of surgical treatment for benign colon diseases such as chronic constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, ischemic bowel disease, and diverticular disease. In addition, we perform collaborative and multidisciplinary treatment through regular meetings with professors from various departments belonging to the colon cancer clinic.
